Goals and Benefits of the Chronic Pain Program
The Pain Management-Functional Restoration Program :
Chronic Pain-Functional Restoration Evaluation Process
Diagnostic assessment will be initiated prior to the patient’s entry into the program. Patients will undergo Physical Medicine, Physical Therapy, and Psychological Evaluation prior to acceptance and entry into the pain management-functional restoration program. Severe pain behavior or pain disability is not considered grounds for non-admission as these limitations will be addressed as part of the treatment plan if indicated. Patients will have their programs individually designed to accommodate their initial level of functioning. The goal of the initial evaluation process is to obtain measures of baseline functioning so that appropriate treatment goals can be developed.
Psychology
Our mental health counselors have experience in pain management-functional restoration and behavioral medicine techniques. Emphasis is upon attaining a healthy sense of self-regulation. Patients are educated in related topics such as neuropsychology of pain and psychological strategies/coping skills that can be employed to lessen the intensity of subjectively perceived pain. Other issues that are commonly addressed include family problems in chronic pain, sexual dysfunction, social economic matters as well as depression/anxiety/anger and other cognitive issues. Therapeutic experiences include individual, group and didactic presentations.
Relaxation Training
Relaxation training for psycho-physiological therapy is a traditional medical procedure. This type of training represents a bridge between physical medicine and psychology: a kind of behavioral medicine. This training experience will assist the patient in reduction of maladaptive neuromuscular difficulties, which can reduce the severity of suffering as it relates to the pain experience.
Vocational Assessment
The vocational counselor conducts a vocational assessment to determine the patient’s vocational interests as they relate to training or job placement. Interfacing is coordinated with employers and vocational agencies such as DARS. Return to work is encouraged if appropriate.
Physical Therapy
Patients will be actively involved in physical activities that will increase flexibility, muscle tone, circulation, mobility and endurance. Improving physical strength, body mechanics and proper posture will be emphasized as well as increased ability of work related activities. The primary focus will be on restoration of function as a whole.
Acupuncture
In keeping with our comprehensive approach to pain management-functional restoration, we are pleased to offer acupuncture as a part of our interdisciplinary treatment approach. Acupuncture alters the neurochemistry of the patient’s body without medications and their accompanying side effects. It is an ancient and proven conservative way to treat chronic pain conditions especially when the diagnosis favors a less invasive approach.
Massage, Yoga and other Modalities
Various modalities are utilized to expand the patient’s awareness of interdisciplinary opportunity. Most reinforces self-regulation and the basic concept of a “self-help” model is utilized. Participation in a variety of activities is included to eliminate the concept of invalidism within the patient.
Reasons For Referral To Our Facility
The patient has not responded to primary or secondary stages of physical medicine/physical therapy treatment in a reasonable period of time (between 3 to 6 months) and; The patient exhibits pain behavior that is limiting and/or mental/emotional dysfunction, which is disruptive to their activities of daily living to include work.
Physician Referrals
Referring of patients can be made directly to our Pain Management-Functional Restoration Program’s Office. We will accept Workers’ Compensation, some Private Insurance and, in some instances, letters of protection from attorneys. Verification of benefits, pre-authorization etc. will be processed in our office. Routine contact with the referring physician will be maintained throughout the patient’s program participation. The referring physician will continue in the role of primary care physician and the patient will be returned to their direct treatment upon program completion.
